What began as a short trip to Nindooinbah Estate for a simple roof repair became one of RAC’s longest-running projects with over six years spent on the property on a variety of projects and a longstanding relationship with the Client. The restoration of the original homestead was easily the most finely detailed and intricate work on the Estate.
- The existing condition of the homestead was poor due to a sustained lack of maintenance and with the high level of heritage listing it was essential that all work undertaken was closely documented and approved
- As with many heritage projects, a fine balance must be struck between original design and contemporary living requirements. Original elements were honoured and repaired where possible and all new works were sympathetic to the original design
- The sheer scale of work required to restore the homestead to its original state required a high level of ongoing commitment from RAC. An onsite joinery workshop was created to restore furniture and timber detailing, 120m of sandstone retaining wall was hand cut and laid, 25km of timber fence was erected, painted and hand-pressed caps were installed
- Extremely thorough processes of programming, estimating and accounting were required to accurately and transparently document costs to the Client. These processes continue to inform RAC’s current practice and approach of constant communication with the client and complete transparency throughout the construction period
